Switzerland is a country as famous for its pocket knives as it is for its chocolate. But to travellers, Swiss fame is largely focused on its Alpine landscape. Beautiful and majestic, many visitors prefer to take in the scenery through activity, rather than mere sightseeing: skiing, hiking, hang-gliding and rafting are only a number of the outstanding opportunities the Alps award.

Brief History

The oldest traces of hominid existence in Switzerland date back about 150,000 years. Archeological evidence suggests that hunter-gatherers were already settled in the lowlands north of the Alps in the late Paleolithic period. By the Neolithic period, the area was relatively densely populated. The oldest known farming settlements in Switzerland, which were found at Gächlingen, have been dated to around 5300 BC. Remains of Bronze Age pile dwellings from as early as 3800 BC have been found in the shallow areas of many lakes. Around 1500 BC, Celtic tribes settled in the area. The Raetians lived in the eastern regions, while the west was occupied by the Helvetii. In 1291, the cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden conspired against the Habsburgs. Their union, the nucleus of the Old Swiss Confederacy, is recorded in the Federal Charter, a document probably written after the fact, in the early 14th century. At the battles of Morgarten in 1315 and Sempach 1386, the Swiss defeated the Habsburg army, allowing the confederacy to continue within the Holy Roman Empire. The Swiss victory in a war against the Swabian League in 1499 amounted to de facto independence from the Holy Roman Empire. In 1506, Pope Julius II engaged the Swiss Guard that continues to serve the papacy to the present day. During the French Revolutionary Wars, the revolutionary armies boiled eastward, enveloping Switzerland in their battles against Austria. In 1798 Switzerland was completely overrun by the French and became the united Helvetic Republic, effectively abolishing the cantons. The Congress of Vienna of 1815 fully re-established Swiss independence and the European powers agreed to permanently recognise Swiss neutrality (Restoration). At this time, the territory of Switzerland was increased, by the new cantons of Valais, Neuchatel and Geneva. As a consequence of the civil war, Switzerland adopted a federal constitution in 1848, amending it extensively in 1874 and establishing federal responsibility for defence, trade, and legal matters, leaving all other matters to the cantonal governments. From then, and over much of the 20th century, continuous political, economic, and social improvement has characterized Swiss history. The major powers respected Switzerland's neutrality during World War I. During World War II, detailed invasion plans were drawn up by the Germans, but Switzerland was never attacked. Switzerland was able to remain independent through a combination of military deterrence, economic concessions to Germany, and good fortune as larger events during the war delayed an invasion. In 1963, Switzerland joined the Council of Europe. Women were granted the right to vote only in 1971, and an equal rights amendment was ratified in 1981. Switzerland is not a member state of the EU, but has been (together with Liechtenstein) surrounded by EU territory since the joining of Austria in 1995. In 2005, Switzerland agreed to join the Schengen treaty.

Wildlife In The Galapagos

Most travelers go to the Galapagos Islands in order to experience the wildlife. There is stunning geology and natural features here although the strange and extremely timid animals truly captures people's attention. Most of the animals here are considered megafauna. Megafuana is an animal being in a small environment devoid of major predators becoming larger, filling a different niche and becoming extremely specialized. The problem that megafuana face is that being extremely specialized they do not adjust to change well. In the past megafuana became extinct because of natural phenomena like volcanic eruptions, cooler periods or warming periods in the planets cycle. Sadly most megafuana in the last hundred years became extinct because of humans or domesticated animals gone feral. The Galapagos is one of the last places on earth with extensive megafuana. Places like Australia, New Zealand, Crete, North America, Hawaii and countless other little islands used to have extensive megafuana populations. In the Galapagos Islands a traveller can get a glimpse of what the world used to look like before humans came along.

The Caribbean caters well for scuba divers. There are dive-shops on most of the islands and it is perfectly possible to try the sport out for the first time while you are there. You do not need to be trained in advance or to go on a specific scuba diving holiday. With the PADI ‘resort course’ that is available in most islands, it is quite possible to get underwater within a day--it consists of safety instruction and a tester in a pool followed by a guided open-water dive on the reef.

The Future of the Hawk

The Galapagos Hawk is a recent arrival to the islands only coming 300,000 years ago. These birds are known for their fearless nature towards humans and other animals. Like most raptors the females are larger being 55 cm from beak to tail and 120 cm from wing tip to wing tip. These birds hunt in groups at about 50 to 200 feet in the air, with the dominate bird being allowed to eat its fill before the others are allowed to start. Due to the proximity to the equator there is no distinct breeding season and nests are built in low trees or lava wedges and occasionally on the ground itself.

Sadly the number of these birds has dwindled to only about 150 mating pairs, although there has been a come back in recent years. The closest relative to the Galapagos Hawk is Swainson's Hawk.

The Caribbean offers some of the finest sites in the world for scuba diving and snorkeling. The usually crystal clear warm water offers those travelers with an interest in the underwater world endless opportunities. The Caribbean extends in a broad arc of over 4000 km from the Bahamas in the north to Guyana and Suriname in the south. For the underwater adventurer, the Caribbean includes coral reefs, large and small sand barriers, mangroves, lagoons, and river estuaries in which to dive. Dive sites offer stretches of reef teeming with tropical fish and walls that drop from six to 6000 meters, wrecks and caves to explore, coral-clad pinnacles and underwater fumaroles that bubble volcanic gases, thousands of tropical fish and marine mammals such as sharks and dolphins.

Why Choose Caribbean

Head a little further inland and you'll discover interesting historical cities and mountainous areas.

North of the this line, the Bahamas are also regarded as part of the Caribbean. In the north of the Caribbean you can find the bigger islands, like Cuba, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico.

Although compared to most other regions/continents in the world there are almost no real big cities, several are worth a visit of their own, most notably Havana. Others are mentioned because of the fact that they (can) act as a gateway to the Caribbean, more than other places.

New York State is a state in the northeast of the USA and was one of the original 13 Colonies. When most people talk about New York State they just say Upstate New York. Although people forget that Upstate New York is home to amazing national and state parks that are quite stunning. There is also good skiing and some neat towns upstate that get overshadowed by the Big Apple on the coast. The largest city is New York City.Vivamus Sagittis Lacus New York covers 141,300 km2 and ranks as the 27th largest state by size. The Great Appalachian Valley dominates eastern New York, while Lake Champlain is the chief northern feature of the valley, which also includes the Hudson River flowing southward to the Atlantic Ocean. The rugged Adirondack Mountains, with vast tracts of wilderness, lie west of the valley. Most of the southern part of the state is on the Allegheny Plateau, which rises from the southeast to the Catskill Mountains. The highest elevation in New York is Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks. New York's borders touch two Great Lakes (Erie and Ontario); the provinces of Ontario and Quebec in Canada; Lake Champlain; three New England states (Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut); the Atlantic Ocean, and two Mid-Atlantic States, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In addition, Rhode Island shares a water border with New York.

In contrast with New York City's urban atmosphere, the vast majority of the state is dominated by farms, forests, rivers, mountains, and lakes. New York's Adirondack Park is the largest state park in the United States.

The Hudson River begins at Lake Tear of the Clouds and flows south through the eastern part of the state without draining Lakes George or Champlain. Upstate and downstate are often used informally to distinguish New York City or its greater metropolitan area from the rest of New York State. The placement of a boundary between the two is a matter of great contention. Unofficial and loosely defined regions of Upstate New York include the Southern Tier, which often includes the counties along the border with Pennsylvania, and the North Country, which can mean anything from the strip along the Canadian border to everything north of the Mohawk River.

The House is expected to vote soon on the USA Freedom Act. If passed, the bill would impose several new restrictions for surveillance operations, including limits on the NSA’s ability to collect phone records of US citizens. Learning to Program

A journalist I follow on Twitter recently asked me the best way to start to learn how to program. It’s a question I get asked a lot and, although it has been said before, here’s my advice for learning how to program: The most important thing, by far, is to find a project you are dedicated to completing. Pick something that will disappoint you or your employer if you don't finish it. There are two reasons for this. First, you'll learn best if you attach new knowledge to old. Seeing code though the lens of a problem you know how to solve is an invaluable way to understand it and remember it. Second, it will give you the momentum to scale the steeper parts of the learning curve. You need to be more afraid of missing your deadline than you are of programming! Next, pick a language. Go to a bookstore and flip through the first chapter of both a Python book and a Ruby book or browse the web for introductions to the languages. There are other languages but these two are excellent. Pick whichever language delights you more. They're quite different. Python I find more to the liking of perfectionists while Ruby is attractive to left-brained folks. Of course there are plenty of artists who use Python and neat-freaks who use Ruby. Don't anguish over the decision! If you can't decide, simply flip a coin. You really can't go wrong with either. And they're like Romance languages: If you're good at one you'll be able to learn the other pretty quickly.

JavaScript is pretty great, too.

Having picked a language, you should learn however is best for you. If you like videos, pay for good video/screencast training. If you learn best with books, buy a book. If you like being in a class, do that. My colleague Lena Groeger wrote an excellent guide to the resources on the web for code learners. Bookmark it. And then: Do your project and don't stop until you're done. And then do another. Just write a lot of code. It’s worthwhile to keep going, even when projects don't push you to learn parts of the language you don't already know. Repetition will help you retain knowledge and you’ll do everything a little better each time. Even very accomplisheddevelopers do this. Programming knowledge is perishable and won't stick unless you keep using it. Get a Github account and learn how to use git (start with Al Shaw’s guide) so you can rewind to earlier versions of your code when you go down blind alleys. Try to read lots of other people's code if you can't figure out how to do something, or just to see other approaches to the same problems. You'll learn best when you break things and have to fix them. Python and Ruby both give great error messages. Google them and you'll see how somebody else fixed the same bug. Don't just copy and paste the solution, but try to understand what was broken and how the fix works. If you Google your error and nobody else seems have gotten it, you’ve probably made a basic error like a misspelling or a missing comma. Soon you'll find yourself knowing intuitively what different errors mean how to fix them. Running of the Bulls

The San Fermin Festival in Pamplona starts every year at 12.00 on the 6th of July, and last until midnight on the 14th. The biggest day of the festival is on the 7th of July, when the statue of San Fermin is carried through the streets of the city. The most famous event during the week in the Running of the Bulls, the Running takes place on the 7th of July, and from than every morning at 8:00am during the week. Six bulls and six steers are released from their corrals, and are guided to the Bullfighting ring over a 825 metres long course through the narrow streets, in a mere 3 minutes. Hundreds of people run in front, and along side of the bulls.

The event is not without danger:

Over the years 15 people have been killed and each year around 200 to 300 are injured.
As a visitor it is possible to take part in the running.
You need to be on the course at 7.30am, be over 18 years old, and you can't be under the influence of alcohol.
It is also not allowed to run in the wrong direction. Needless to say, taking part is at your own risk.

The Story of Costa del Sol

Bright and early morning as we began our drive through the mountains to the Costa del Sol. The drive through the mountains was a bit scary. Lots of steep cliffs beside the never ending winding roads. Our first stop was Ronda. Ronda has the oldest bullfighting ring in all of Spain called The Real Maesrtanza. It was built around 1785. Some of the most famous matadors in all of Spain fought in this bullring. We did a quick tour of the bullfighting museum.

I learned that the matadors that wave the capes are not the ones that kill the bull. The main matador is on a horse and uses 4 spears to kill the bull.

The other matadors waving the capes are used to tire out the bull. Seems a little unfair to the bull to me. There are very strict rules on how the bull is supposed to be killed. The spears must be placed in the spine of the bull. No concern about cruelty to animals here. The killed bull is then sent to the local butcher and the meat is sold to restaurants and the bull heads are stuffed and in all the tapas bars in Spain. At least I think that is the case as I have been seeing bull heads everywhere.

Honesty is saying what we know or suspect to be real, even when we don’t like the consequences. It is also much more.

Because most deception is actually self deception, true honesty requires that we recognize our natural human penchant for fooling ourselves. In particular, honesty requires that we guard against self-serving biases: our tendency to seek confirmation for what we already believe while ignoring contradictory evidence; our tendency to put blame on others and take credit for ourselves; our tendency to think that what is good for us is good for the world and even to make the gods themselves in our own image.

Honesty is a lifetime process of catching ourselves in falsehood and, however reluctantly, turning away from it.

Our normal view of ideas is also a normative view: it embodies a canon or an ideal about which ideas we ought to accept or admire or approve of. In brief, we ought to accept the true and the beautiful. According to the normal view, the following are virtual tautologies--trivial truths not worth the ink to write them down:Idea X was believed by the people because X was deemed true.People approved of X because people found X to be beautiful.These norms are not just dead obvious, they are constitutive: they set the rules whereby we think about ideas. We require explanations only when there are deviations from these norms. Nobody has to explain why a book purports to be full of true sentences, or why an artist might strive to make something beautiful--it just "stands to reason." The constitutive status of these norms grounds the air of paradox in such aberrations as "The Metropolitan Museum of Banalities" or " The Encyclopedia of Falsehoods." What requires special explanation in the normal view are the cases in which despite the truth or beauty of an idea it is not accepted, or despite its ugliness or falsehood it is.

Typography is the foundation of any design project we work on. In fact, we begin every project by first establishing the governing rules of type ensuring maximum readability comfort across all screen resolutions. This is accomplished by taking into account everything from vertical rhythm, to comfortable reading measures, to scalable typography and incremental leading. All font sizes are set in relative em measurements which allows for the proportional scaling of font sizes based on the end user’s browser settings. This page represents base styles and rules for type and should be considered a work in progress. Top Level Header

Above is an example of a top level header element, or the h1 tag. All page titles have been set in this tag. Consider using the Second Level Header tag, h2, for any important page level headings.

Second Level Header

As mentioned above, the Second Level Header is best used for important page level headings. Though there is no hard and fast rule regarding the amount of h1 tags allowed on a page, I tend to always only use one and rely on h2 for critical page headings.

Third Level Header

The Third Level Header may be used for any form of page level headings which falls below the h2 header in a document hierarchy.

Fourth Level Header

The Fourth Level Header may be used for any form of page level headings which falls below the h3 header in a document hierarchy.

Fifth Level Header

Commonly Used Typography Tags

Paragraph

All paragraphs are wrapped with the p tag. This tag can also be wrapped by the blockquote tag if the text is a quote for an external source or a pull quote from the article.

Block Quotes

Block quotes are section of content quoted from an external source or quotes pulled from article itself. The blockquote may contain a p tag. For example, we are quoting Ray Eames, from Quotes on Design, below.

Inline Quotes

The q tag is used for short quotations inline within a paragraph. Here is an example of nested quotations. He said, Buzz Lightyear catch phrase is, To infinity and beyond!

Ordered Lists

Ordered lists, or ol are used to list items in an hierarchical fashion. Each list item, or li, is preceded by a numerical representation of its place in the hierarchy. An ordered list can also contain another ordered list as well as an unordered list, or ul.

Marked or highlighted text

The mark tag is used for indicating text as marked or highlighted for reference purposes, due to its relevance in another context. The mark tag was introduced in HTML 5. Internet Explorer 8 and older do not support this tag. For example: Despite the stock market crash in 2008, the value of my share portfolio increased by 100 percent. I must be doing something right.

Small Print

The small element is used to represent disclaimers, caveats, legal restrictions, or copyrights (commonly referred to as ‘small print’). It can also be used for attributions or satisfying licensing requirements. For example: Copyright © 2013 Press75. All Rights Reserved.

Delete & Insert

Markup of deleted text can be useful in determining differences between multiple versions of the same document. Browsers will normally strike a line through deleted text and underline inserted text. For example: Press75 is located in ~~Monticello, IA~~ Seattle, WA.

Citation

The cite element is used to represent the title of a work (e.g. a book, essay, poem, song, film, TV show, sculpture, painting, musical, exhibition, etc). This can be a work that is being quoted or referenced in detail (i.e. a citation), or it can just be a work that is mentioned in passing. For example: I highly recommend reading The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. It changed my life when I was 15 years old.

Abbreviations & Acronyms

The abbr element is used for any abbreviated text, whether it be acronym, initialism, or otherwise. Any text in the title attribute will appear when the user’s mouse hovers the abbreviation. The acronym tag has been dropped from the HTML 5 specs because of the confusion between these two tags. You should exclusively use abbr but both are styled for this theme. For example: The abbreviation for the National Football League is NFL and the acronym for as soon as possible is ASAP.

Subscript & Superscript

The sub tag defines subscript text. Subscript text appears half a character below the baseline. Subscript text can be used for chemical formulas, like H₂O. The sup tag defines superscript text. Superscript text appears half a character above the baseline. Superscript text can be used for footnotes, like WWW^[1].

Images

The img tag defines an image in an HTML page and has two required attributes: src and alt. Images are not technically inserted into an HTML page. Rather images are linked to HTML pages. The img tag creates a holding space for the referenced image.

A Journey to Space

— What does astronaut see from up there? From the red soil of Africa, the blue water of oceans, to the green lights of the poles and yellow light of human activity, discover, through this journey to space, something astoundingly beautiful and strange at the same time.

I wanted to do something different from what has been done before with those shots. Something more dynamic and fast. After all, ISS travel through space at 28.000km/h! There are also more recent footage that have never been used (at least I think...) in other edits. All the credit goes to the crew members of ISS expeditions 28, 29, 30, 31, 34, shot from 2011 to 2014. The international Space Station weigh 377 tons, orbits the earth at around 350km from the surface, and does one spin around the earth in 1h30, at 28.000k/h! At 1'11 we can see a little refueling shuttle desintegrating back to earth. At 1'20, it's an Orbital Science's Cygnus Orb-2 spacecraft that is launched into orbit. The little green and purple lights you can see at 1'57 are respectively fishing boats and oil platforms offshore with the big city of Bangkok nearby. All the footage (around 80GB of pictures) was processed throught after effects/premiere, denoised for some shots, removal of dead pixels for some shots, deflickering, and simple color grading (didnt want to change the already incredible look! just curves, saturation, and some blue crushing). — Three brief ancient lives allow for the reconstruction of a modest biography – the earliest attributed to Suetonius, another to an otherwise unknown Vacca, and the third anonymous and undated – along with references in Martial, Cassius Dio, Tacitus's Annals, and one of Statius's Silvae.

He found success under Nero, became one of the emperor's close friends and was rewarded with a quaestorship in advance of the legal age. In 60 AD, he won a prize for extemporizing Orpheus and Laudes Neronis at the quinquennial Neronia, and was again rewarded when the emperor appointed him to the augurate. During this time he circulated the first three books of his epic poem, Pharsalia (labelled De Bello civili in the manuscripts), which told the story of the civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey. At some point, a feud began between Nero and Lucan. Two very different accounts of the events have survived that both trivialize the feud. According to Tacitus, Nero became jealous of Lucan and forbade him to publish his poems.[2] According to Suetonius, Nero lost interest in Lucan and Lucan responded by writing insulting poems about Nero that Nero continued to ignore.
